چکیده

Recent lattice model calculations have suggested that a full-layered crystal surface may undergo, under canonical (particle-conserving) conditions, a preroughening-driven two-dimensional phase separation into two disordered flat regions, of opposite order parameter. We have carried out extensive classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the Lennard-Jones fcc(111) surface, to check whether these predictions are relevant or not for a realistic continuous system. Very long simulation times, a grid of temperatures from 2 3 T m to T m , and unusually large system sizes are employed to ensure full equilibrium and good statistics. By examining layer-by-layer occupancies, height fluctuations, sublattice order parameter and X-ray structure factors, we find a clear anomaly at ~0.83T m . The anomaly is distinct from roughening (whose incipiency is also detected at ~0.94T m ), and is seen to be consistent with the preroughening plus phase separation scenario. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The role of fcc tetrahedral subunits in the phase behavior of medium sized Lennard-Jones clusters.

The free energy of a 600-atom Lennard-Jones cluster is calculated as a function of surface and bulk crystallinity in order to study the structural transformations that occur in the core of medium sized clusters. Within the order parameter range studied, we find the existence of two free energy minima at temperatures near freezing. One minimum, at low values of both bulk and surface order, belon...

A molecular dynamics simulation of a water droplet in contact with a platinum surface

A water droplet in contact with a platinum surface was simulated by the molecular dynamics method. Water molecules were modeled with the well-known SPC/E model and the platinum surface was represented by three layers of harmonic molecules with the constant temperature heat bath model using the phantom molecules. Two types of water-platinum pair potential functions based on extended Hückel calcu...

Lennard-Jones Energy Parameter for Pure Fluids from Scaled Particle Theory

By considering the fact that the surface tension of a real fluid arises from a combination of both repulsive and attractive forces between molecules, a new expression for the interfacial tension has been derived from scaled particle theory (SPT)  based on the work of cavity formation and the interaction energy between molecules. At the critical temperature, the interfacial tension between c...

Lattice sums and their phase diagram implications for the classical Lennard-Jones model

High-accuracy lattice sums have been evaluated for the Lennard-Jones 12-6 pair potential, without cutoffs, in the close-packed fcc and hcp lattices. The results confirm the small relative stability of hcp at low pressure, and locate precisely the first-order phase transition at zero temperature to the fcc structure. The reduced pressure p / at this transition is approximately 878.476 . . . , wi...

Can dynamic contact angle be measured using molecular modeling?

A method is presented for determining the dynamic contact angle at the three-phase contact between a solid, a liquid, and a vapor under an applied force, using molecular simulation. The method is demonstrated using a Lennard-Jones fluid in contact with a cylindrical shell of the fcc Lennard-Jones solid. Advancing and receding contact angles and the contact angle hysteresis are reported for the ...
